This design was originally made as an illustration to a French book titled 'Les Chants de Maldoror' (The Chants of Maldoror) written in1868 by Comte de Lautréamont. The drawing illustrates a passage from the book in which the main character Maldoror faces God. God takes the form of a dragon which is half tiger, half snake, to battle Maldoror, who transforms into a giant eagle.
